A story (Android and Human) – Chapter 1

This short story has been written by me a while ago in Turkish language. Now, I will try to translate it into English. Unfortunately I couldn’t complete to translate the whole story.  I have translated only the half of it.

Android and Human

An artificial brain, which has been made as a software, simulates human brain, embedded into an electronics card, was replaced into a dead human skull. An artificial brain in a human body… Before the human died, whole memory of the human was loaded into the electronic card’s memory.

To test the artificial intelligence, a ‘real’ human and ‘artificial’ one, also called android, would discuss in a small, dimmed lighted room. The room was almost empty, there were only two modest chairs and a table.

Maxim was the starter the conversation:

Are you awere of what you are?

Alexei was shocked and surprised for this instantaneous question. He thought that the android had been sure that the real human was it.

Alexei: I’m aware what I am, but it is obvious that you are not! You are just an illusion created by electronic brain, which replaced into the skull of the man after he died.

It was time to be surprised for Maxim, this time. He thought that, android had been told that it was the real human for validity of the test.

Maxim: Ok, I see, I have to persuade that you are the android and I think this will be more difficult than I thought.

Alexei: I think the same.

Maxim: “An artificial intelligence can completely imitate a human and it can define itself as having free will and identity, but I think it can never feel the pain really as I feel. I do not even talk about mental pain, I just mean simple physical pain. I think it is beyond the pattern created by brain cells. So, an artificial brain that imitates human brain, can only pretend to feel pain but cannot really feel it in its soul.”

Alexei: This is very classical opinion but I think the same.

While Alexei was saying that, he suddenly held Maxim’s hand and dug in his nail into Maxim’s skin.

Maxim suddenly reacted and retracted his hand. He did never expect such a thing.

Maxim: ” What are you doing? Are you losing your mind?”

Alexei: “You actually don’t feel the pain. You just imitate the reaction of humans as you said.”

Maxim: “Ok… It’s clear. We cannot continue this way. Both of us, never can prove that the pain we feel is real.”

Alexei: “I’m afraid, you’re right.”

There were a silence for them to think. Alexei started to think that even though it was possible to prove that the thing in front of him was not a real human, it could be too difficult. He wanted to find a way over free-will.

Maxim was sure about his consciousness but he started to think that to prove the fact was impossible.

Alexei: Let’s talk about free-will!

Maxim: Yea… Free-will is really an interesting phenomenon. There are just… just millions of millions neurons. Neurons just consist of some kind of atoms like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphor. How do they can create a consciousness with a fantastic free-will? It is really interesting.

Alexei: The whole is greater then the sum of its parts. For example, ants look too unreasonable but an ant colony looks smart.

Maxim: The theory of holos… It is not enough to explain free-will, I think. There is much more mystery about free-will.

Alexei: Do you think that we have a detached soul beside our physical existence?

Maxim: May be…

Alexei: Sometimes, I think the same. However, we also have to prove how that being detached from brain and material world, has a free-will.

Maxim: May be you are right. In regards of holos theory, the behaviors of an ant colony could be explain by just behaviors of individual unreasonable ants. May be this is just an illusion. For instance computers also are very complex systems. But a computer’s behavior can be explained by behaviors of individual electrons. Human-being is looking up a mystery behind of all, because he can’t understand the whole complex chain. It’s easier way to shift the blame to ghosts and to take shelter in peaceful mystery.
